The Carey Tobacco Club was started a few years ago in response to the interest shown by a few of my pipe smoking friends. Like me, they had found it more and more difficult to purchase fresh tobacco that they could enjoy smoking for a realistic price. These hints and suggestions will help you to enjoy, to a greater degree, the pleasure of Briar pipe smoking and ensure that you get the maximum use and life from your new pipe, no matter what make.

1. whilst you could smoke your pipe flat out from day one, it is advisable to gradually season and burn in a Briar bowl over a period of twoto three weeks.
2. for the first five or six smokes, half fill the bowl with loosely packed tobacco, tamping down lightly after lighting. Smoke gently and do not draw too deeply.
3. gradually increase the fill of each bowlful over the following week. Continue to draw gently enabling a thin coating of carbon to build up on the inside wall of the tobacco chamber. This will protect the Briar and help prevent "burn out" occurring.
4. if the outside of the bowl becomes hot, rather than warm, during this curing or seasoning period, stop smoking and turn out the tobacco. Allow the pipe to cool down completely before refilling and when re-lighting again, smoke gently.
5. following the above procedure will allow optimum seasoning of the bowl to develop and help build up a thin layer of carbon. Never allow the carbon to build up to more than a millimetre or so, and when cleaning or carefully reaming the tobacco chamber, always leave the carbon lining remaining at about one millimetre.
